UNMAP

UNMAP is an innovative format designed to rediscover urban spaces. Through an interactive map, high-definition immersive virtual tours and multimedia content, it reveals what usually remains invisible: hidden places, overlooked details, and stories at risk of being forgotten. The project stems from the awareness that the three-dimensionality of our urban spaces is not merely a perceptual or technological matter, but a narrative one. It is the history of the places we explore that leads us into their depth – and our cities are true mines of stories. UNMAP employs advanced technologies to recover an oral, historical, and artistic heritage in danger of disappearing, reorganizing it into a MAP unlike any of the commercial ones we are used to using. Free, accessible, and standing in contrast to overtourism, UNMAP redefines the very idea of a map, suggesting new connections and ways of exploring. UNMAP Palermo is the inaugural edition of this pilot project. Three sections come together to form a “cultural x-ray” – stories, immersive virtual journeys, and archival discoveries – creating a visual short-circuit that transforms the way we perceive the spaces we inhabit. Through inaccessible sites, architectural marvels, and legends, a portrait of Palermo emerges, revealing the richness hidden beneath its streets and behind its architecture.
